Dr Jean Damascene Ntawukuriryayo, Rwanda’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament, is the first official opposition challenger of President Paul Kagame in the August presidential elections.
Dr Ntawukuriryayo, who has been in political activity since Rwanda’s pre-genocidal era, was chosen by his political party the Social Democratic Party (PSD) on Saturday as its flag bearer for the elections slated for August 9.
PSD is also the first opposition political party to officially elect a presidential candidate while two others including the Democratic Green Party and the United Democratic Forces remain unregistered, pending criminal investigations. About 700 delegates of the PSD converged for the 4th national congress in Kigali, to vote for the new executive committee and nominate a flag bearer.
Insiders said Dr Ntawukuriryayo was seconded by the outgoing Executive Committee which was headed by another parliamentary leader Dr Vincent Biruta, who has been the party leader since 2005.
Tried and tested
Dr Ntawukuriryayo is a former Health Minister and is currently the Deputy Speaker of Rwanda’s Chamber of Deputies which is one of the two parts of Rwanda’s bicameral Parliament. PSD is a party known for its centre-left ideologies which are progressive, social liberal and social democratic.
Dr Ntawukuriryayo said his political organisation had what it takes to win the presidential elections and also emphasised the need to maintain unity and reconciliation and need to fight against the genocide ideology.
